Sleep Disorders

Sleep plays a vital role in your mental, emotional, and physical health. It affects your overall well-being and quality of life for years to come.

Sleep Better Moving Forward

In a culture that places so much value on being busy and constantly on-the-go, it’s no wonder that so many Americans are sleep deprived. Between the long work hours, running the kids to and from school, the stress of the job, and staying up late to study or finish a project, sometimes cutting a few hours of sleep seems like the only option. Maybe it’s not life’s demands keeping you up, but a medical condition. This is why sleep deprivation often goes unnoticed: it’s time to realize how important quality sleep is to your physical and mental health.

Sleep disorders or sleep deprivation can interfere with your health, safety, relationships, and learning. At OCPA, we make the connection between sleep, and medical or psychiatric conditions. Our staff of well trained providers will be able to provide you with care tailored to your specific needs.

A good night’s sleep helps your brain function properly throughout the day and promotes emotional health.

While you sleep, your brain processes the memories from the previous day preparing for the day ahead and forming new pathways to help you learn and function properly. Sleep deficiency affects your brain activity causing lapses in memory, difficulty making decisions, compromising your safety, creating barriers to learning, and even making it difficult to control your emotions and behavior. This can make other conditions such as depression, suicide, anxiety, and mood swings worse. In short, these conditions are related to sleep deprivation, and the solution involves rebuilding the foundation of solid sleep.

Not getting enough sleep or getting irregular sleep can also have adverse effects on your physical health.

Sleep is a time when your body has a chance to repair any damage from the previous day. Increased risk for serious health concerns including heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, kidney disease, stroke, and obesity have all been linked with chronic sleep deficiency.

Sleep is regulated by the body clock (SCN or suprachiasmatic nucleus), and it is set by morning sunlight. This daily sleep cycle(circadian) regulates many of the hormones such as the thyroid hormone, cortisol, and melatonin. All of these can have additional effects on your mental and physical health. Sometimes working night shifts, staying up late, and other medical or psychiatric illnesses will disrupt this cycle. If this happens, we need to intervene and restore your health by resetting this circadian rhythm.
